About the event

Heidi Marques and Jazztrix Quintet present The Birth of Bossa Nova: A Tribute to Astrud Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Gilberto and Jobim are both famous for “The Girl from Ipanema”, a Bossa Nova hit with music written by Jobim in 1962. Gilberto sung the song with saxophonist Stan Getz in 1964, and it has become the quintessential Bossa Nova standard. Bossa Nova began in Brazil in the late 1950s and Jobim was one of the early writers and performers in the genre.

Heidi Marques and Jazztrix will be performing “Girl from Ipanema”, plus many other songs sung by Astrid Gilberto or written by Antonio Carlos Jobim including “Wave”, “Desafinado”, “Corcovado”, “One Note Samba”, and “Chega De Saudade (No More Blues)”.

Vocalist Heidi Marques performs locally with jazz ensemble/duo “Spindrift”, who recently staged a Julie London tribute at the Albany Entertainment Centre and The Ellington Jazz Club. She performs with both the twenty-piece jazz big band “Rainbow Coast Big Band” and twelve-piece soul band “Southern Soul”.

Marques will be joined by Jazztrix Quintet, featuring David Rastrick on trumpets, Adam Cook on piano, Ross Dwyer on guitar, Grant Moulden on double bass, and Lauchlan Gillett on drum-set.
