About the event

OVERVIEW

Inspired by his South African heritage, Madoda works on a large scale, building organic-shaped vessels with smooth surfaces punctuated by intricate, repetitive patterns. His hand-coiled, burnished and smoke-fired pieces are a contemporary evolution of traditional Zulu ceramics, and his curvaceous forms with hand-carved embellishments are entirely distinct.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE

The workshop will run for 6 hours, commencing at Denmark CRC Gallery at 10am and concluding at the ArtsHouse at 4pm.

During the workshop, Madoda will present a number of works (via photographic images) in progress to illustrate his process and technique.

Participants will receive a slab of clay to mould and follow along as Madoda demonstrates and instructs on the various stages of coiling, carving and burnishing.

The workshop will conclude with a demonstration of smoke firing.

Participants will need to bring:

• Steel kidney/ steel scrapers/ribs

• Carving tools

• A scalpel knife

• A surform

• Sponges

• Semi-precious stones for burnishing (smooth, polished with no knicks or damage. Should be large enough to grasp easily in your hand, but small enough to manoeuvre over a small 3D surface)

• Apron and hand-towel

• Note book and pen/pencil

Madoda suggests to bring as many tools as you feel comfortable using, especially ones you are more familiar with.

Please note:

• Covered footwear must be worn for the duration of the workshop. Aprons and comfortable studio clothes are recommended.

• A light morning tea will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch.

This event is for attendees aged 16+. It is not appropriate for children.
