Zigatango

Zigatango

Sunday 24 January, Denmark Civic Centre, 8pm (doors open 7.30pm)

Gypsy and Tango music will come together in an exhilarating evening of music and dance. Zigatango brings a youthful flair and wild intensity to the traditional styles of Gypsy and Tango music. Formed in early 2006, the band has accumulated a diverse repertoire which includes arrangements of fiery Gypsy melodies from Eastern EuropeDenmark and the music of Astor Piazzolla, the legendary Argentinean bandoneon player who is credited with revolutionising tango music.

Band members say that in spite of the not insignificant geographical separation of South America and Eastern Europe, their respective musical styles have much in common: both have a basis in dance or in lively folk songs, and feature a burning intensity of emotion, often combined with a wild, almost demonic energy. It was because of these qualities that the five Perth-based instrumentalists decided to perform and record the two styles together. The Perth based musicians, all still in their twenties enjoy presenting their unique arrangements of traditional world music in a fun and accessible way.

The evening will be cabaret-style with plenty of room to dance. Bookings for a table of six or individual seats can be made at Spot Newsagency where you can also pre-order plates of tapas (mixed or vegetarian). Limited plates of tapas will be sold on the night.

Tickets are $25/22 and tapas $22 for a plate for two available at Spot Newsagency

Zigatango will also offer a taste of their performance at the markets on the same day. For those who are keen to dance we offer a one off workshop in Argentinian Tango and Gypsy Dance
