Writing in the Wild:

A Nature Writers’ Retreat in Denmark, WA, Oct 14-16

Explore the wonders of the Great South West Edge and practice the craft of nature writing.

Stimulate your senses. Ignite your creative flame. Renew your spirit.

Find your poetic voice. Explore your connection to nature.

Open your heart through writing.

Where forest, river and inlet meet the sea.

In this inaugural nature writing event at Denmark’s Centre for Sustainable Living,

writers will engage with ecologists in a creative and educational exploration of local landscapes.

Three prize-winning published nature writers from Perth, Annamaria Weldon, John Charles Ryan, and Nandi Chinna will offer presentations, readings, workshops, writingwritingfacilitation, a panel discussion (with other local guest writers) and mentoring in the field for participants of Writing in the Wild.“In times of grief and disconnection, nature writing whispers about our connectedness. The fate of the hakea is also ours,” writes John Ryan, botanist and award winning poet, and guest writer at the retreat. One of the highlights of the weekend will be a choice of three themed and guided wilderness walks – coastal rock formations, forest wildflowers, and inlet shorebirds. Each of the naturalist-guides will be accompanied by a local writing facilitator and a published guest writer as mentor. Local writing facilitators will be Silvia Lehmann, Linda Bradbury and Nicola-Jane le Breton.

Other highlights open to the broader community to attend are: an evening with the artists at Tea House Books in Denmark on Friday night, and an engaging Panel discussion hosted by Bookmark at the Albany Museum.

The topic for the Panel is titled “The crying game – writing about nature, our great disconnect” and will explore the struggle that many writers from a non-indigenous Australian heritage have writing about the Australian landscape. Two local writers will join the three visiting artists for this discussion with Andrew Collins, from ABC radio, moderating the event.

the banner projectcwa banner

The scout hall came alive last week with the ebb and flow of creative energies, quiet contemplation, laughter and many new friendships made!

Professional artist Nikki Green and first time art facilitator Ruth Dennison worked alongside volunteers from local community groups to produce the Denmark Shire Centenary banners which will hang in Strickland Street and South Coast Highway in September.

Many people from different walks of life grew to understand each other and their own groups place within our diverse community.

The SES were lucky to have year 8 students Libby Cooper and Megan Allison to help them. Tracey Allison and Charmain Shelly, as well as having full time jobs and families, each volunteer up to 25 hrs a week to keep our emergency services operating. After recent efforts to get new volunteers, the SES now has about 22 members!

Simone Woolhouse made the banner for Denmark College of Agriculture which celebrates its 70th birthday next year.

We learned from Jean Ellen Payne, Edie Noble and Monica Boyes that the CWA ladies are much more than just tea and scones!

Also at the workshops were; Bruce Carter (Environment Centre) Garry Quinn (Denmark Village Theatre) Mirjana Basic (Green Skills CSL) Valeska Wood, Caren Balir & Nikki Green (Denmark Arts)

Caren Blair - ph 0412 477 624 - co-ordinator of the banner project

Expressing and Discovering Your Sensual Goddess
Pastel painting with artist Dawn Meader

Sunday 31 January, Centre for Sustainable Living

This workshop is so much fun.  Create a life-size Goddess drawing of yourself and learn all about the power of turquoise and coral to help you experience and express your senses. Turquoise is playful, spontaneous and enhances clear, creative communication.

Coral is sensitive, empathic, caring and wisely gentle.  We use dance to warm up with essential oils, aura soma and music to create an environment in which you can paint and draw effortlessly and tune into that part of yourself that intuitively knows how to create. The life-size Goddess picture of yourself will reflect the expression of different senses within your body.  Every colour relates to a different sense. For example, the heart and green are related to the sense of touch, so, when you draw your heart you will awaken it with touch.

Ring Nicola on 9848 3113 or 0421 633 124 and visit dawnmeader.com OR email Nicola at nlebreton@westnet.com.au

Fee including all materials: $130.00
